Famagusta

PictureOriginally a fishing village Famagusta was grown by the influx of refugees first from Salamis in 648 then by the Christian Refugees after the invasion of the Holy Lands.(1291 AD.) It soon became one of the most important and wealthy cities in the region. At one time (early 14th Century) about 350 churches and many trading posts were built within the area later fortified with impressive defensive walls by the Venetians.

In 1372 The Genoese invaded the island and the City sacking most of its wealth. In 1571 under the long siege by the Ottoman Turks many buildings were damaged by the cannon balls. The British used the stones to build the Suez Canal and the Quays of Port Said. In 1974 the City was again under siege by Greek Cypriots, left 11,000 Turkish Cypriot civillians defending the City.

PictureThe important Historical monuments worth visiting are: The Walls and Bastions, Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (St. Nicholas Cathedral) Othello Tower , Remains of Countless Mediaeval Churches. Salamis , Kings Tombs, St. Barnabas Monastery. The  Ruins of Enkomi. The visitor will enjoy many fine beaches stretching miles along the coast of ancient Roman City of Salamis.

Shopping: For many holidaymakers and beach-goers, the

shopping scene in Famagusta is an unexpected highlight.

Good quality souvenirs of Cyprus are plentiful, and items

tends to be relatively inexpensive, particularly when

compared to UK prices. When shopping at Famagusta,

expect to find an array of leather goods, including handbags

and shoes, together with jewellery, lace, lines, pottery and

local Cypriot brandy. You will also see plenty of familiar

brand names at the supermarkets, should you need to

self-cater, with the best selection being found in nearby

Paralimni. Of note, there is also a 24/7 So Easy convenience

store at Paralimni.

Activities: Although Famagusta may not exactly be the

festival capital of Cyprus, there are some extremely

noteworthy Cypriot events staged here each year, with

an relatively good selection of things to do in this part

of Cyprus during the busy summer season.
Very nearby Famagusta and to the south, the Ayia

Napa International Festival is one not to miss and its

exciting celebrations take place throughout the month

of September. Expect processions, folk music and

dancing, feasting, partying, art exhibitions and more.

Restaurants: Large casinos in Famagusta feature a

reliable choice of restaurants and similar eateries,

providing somewhere to enjoy a meal before an evening

of gambling, when complimentary drinks can be expected.

If you prefer something a little less extravagant in the

way of dining, then Turkish-style cafes and kebab parlours

are at the other end of the scale, with cheap tasty meals,

freshly prepared shish-kebabs, and selections of small

Cypriot / Turkish dishes (mezes).

Nightlife: Night times in Famagusta can be as quiet or

lively as you would like it to be. There are a few night

clubs around, hotel casino's in the area also offer good

entertainment with live dance shows and music. However

Famagusta is a good spot for those who are more looking

to relax.
