Kyrenia

Picture

Situated on the north coast of Cyprus, Kyrenia, with its 6,000 year long history, unique remains of countless civilisations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and mild climate is an idyllic Mediterranean town.
Bounded to the north by the sea and to the south by the greenery of the Besparmak (Fivefinger) Mountain range, it offers the most magnificent scenery on the island.

Kyrenia's charming and tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats, is framed by the colossal hulk of its Crusader castle. With the backdrop of the jagged mountains behind and the calm sparkling sea in front, the harbour has an intoxicatingly serene atmosphere.

Kyrenia is an easy place to while away any time of the day... exploring shops, markets and local cafés in late morning, strolling in the narrow cobbled alleys behind the harbour in the afternoon, or stepping out for a brisk walk along the promenade and sea wall in the evening.

Shopping: The main shopping area of Kyrenia is just behind the old harbour. A series of narrow twisting

streets will keep you busy for hours. Each street is

well preserved and has its own unique character.

Whether its retail therapy, high street fashion, or

souvenir hunting, Kyrenia has it all. The statue of

the White Dove is where the high street in Kyrenia

begins and from here you will find everything from

jewelers, grocers, and fine boutiques. Cigarettes and

liquor are extremely popular but it is wise to remember to check your customs allowance before purchasing. Popular souvenirs include handicrafts, ceramics, basketry, wood carvings, silver and copper products. Local spirits include raki, brandy, and wine.

Activities: Kyrenia offers the adrenaline-seeker the thrills of action watersports on the warm waters of the Mediterranean, challenging diving amongst wreaks and rocks, and the unmissable experience of paragliding from the mountains to the coast, soaring with the eagles.  Play golf in the mountains in the morning, sail in the afternoon and race pro go karts by night.

The culture-lover has plenty to explore in Kyrenia too, from fascinating Neolithic sites to Roman remains complexes lapped by the sea, Crusader Castles

perched high in the mountains to monasteries covered in priceless frescoes. Bird watching is another activity becoming popular in North Cyprus, with some 220 species of birds touching down on the island every year on their migratory passage, and 347 different species in Cyprus.Migrant birds are even more plentiful than native birds such as the Cyprus warbler (seven of which are unique to Cyprus).

Restaurants: If you’ve never sampled Turkish cuisine you’ll find there’s a wide range of dishes. Try 'karniyarik', a tasty Turkish moussaka, and for pudding 'kurabiye' is a sweet biscuit dusted with sugar. The Turkish firewater is raki, which is just like the Greek ouzo...only stronger!Resorts usually have their own restaurants serving mainly Turkish dishes but some of them do International (Burgers & Chips) options too.Along the beach there are a good selection of fish restaurants and steak houses.
