Istanbul 2010: European Capital Of Culture

Picture

A unique geography. A bridge where not only the East and the West, the past and present, but also the antiquity and the modern meet.

Built within seven hills Istanbul's geographical location is unique, a city steeped in magic and mystery. In its south stretches Marmara Sea and in its North is Black Sea. Its West part is in Europe and East part is in Asia. The important waterline dividing Istanbul into two is the Bosphorus. The only alternative to reach the Aegean Sea and the Meditteranean Sea, therefore to open sea is to use Istanbul and the Bosphorus.
Another important feature of Istanbul is that it has a highly sheltered structure. Especially the center which is presently called as the "historical peninsula", which was made capital city by both Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and its being located on a hill surrounded by three seas made it almost impossible to be conquered. Indeed, Haliç had the quality of being an unparalleled harbour sheltering navy fleets.

The only city in the world to be built on two continents, it possesses thousands of years worth of tales waiting to be discovered. One walks through the cobbled streets of the old quarter, where figures such as Gengis Khan and Marco Polo once roamed, and is instantly reminded of the days the streets played host to traders of all nations and scents of exotic spices blew through the breeze. Aside from this, history abounds on every corner, in the form of Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, beautiful museums and spectacular palaces.

Modern day Istanbul carries on the tradition, Istanbul had staged NATO summits, Eurovision Song contest, World basketball Championship, European Football League Cup final and whole host of international festivals. However, Istanbul is not just a haven of historic culture; it is also a thriving international centre of commerce, and a shopper's paradise. Apart from a number of boutiques housing a variety of labels, you will be overwhelmed by the original and unique leather, gold, silver & Iznik goods that you can find in, among other places, the large and fascinating covered bazaar. You will also be astounded by the nightlife of the city, which does not rest until the sun rises over the Bosphorus.

Shopping: Istanbul has been a port town pretty much

its whole history, goods have transported in and out

of the city for 1000's of years. In modern Istabul, things

have not changed much which makes shopping in

Istanbul, not just about buying things but an experience

in itself. You will find every other high street brands from

personal accessories to elctrical and electronic

retailers. One of the most popular area is Taksim

Square which is nothing short of Oxford Street in

London. However, head down to Beyazit Square

for the real deal, The Grand Bazaar, apart from the fact

that its probably the worlds oldest covered market, it

boast 4,000 stores. And not too far down is the Eygptian

Spice Market and flea market. What you will get at the

bazaars can never be guessed upon, as the possibilities

are limitless, prices will depend on how low you can

make them, local landlords will welcome a good barganing.
